My travel blog from Australia and Scotland
Australia
Day. 1: The travel
Now, the first day of my vacation has passed, but it wasn’t a very interesting day to be honest. Most of the day went to travelling. I had to get up really early in the morning to catch a plane that went 6.30 from Værnes to Australia. When I sat down on the aeroplane, the only thing I was thinking about was that I had a 24 hour plane trip ahead of me. Although I had expected the worst 24 hours of my life, the flight went fine. The only things that “kept me alive” , was music on my mp3-player, and a good book.
Day. 2: Jetlag
The second day I spent on just walking around the hotel, and lying on the beach all day. Even though I was only staying in Australia for a couple of days, I thought it was ok spending a day doing nothing. It really helped me recovering from my jetlag from the flight I did the day earlier.
Day. 3: Sightseeing
On the third day I really wanted to do something fun. I decided to do some sightseeing. I took a bus from the hotel, to the large, famous opera house in Sydney. The opera house looked really special, and it was pretty hard to describe. They told a lot of interesting facts on the sightseeing bus. For example that the opera house was finished in 1973, it is 183 metres long and 120 metres wide. Another really interesting fact was that the opera house it has the same power supply that a town of 25.000 people uses. That is pretty amazing. I also got to see some of the other famous places and buildings in Sydney. I got to see the oldest cathedral in Sydney, and it was from 1847. Because of the fact that I’ve never been a really big fan of sightseeing, I decided to call it an early night and go back to the hotel.
Day. 4: Surf’s up
The day after my sightseeing round, I thought that one day of being a tourist was enough. However I wanted to try to learn something about another typical Australian thing, surfing. All my life I had wanted to try surfing, so I rented a surf board at a local surf shop and went down to the beach. After a couple of embarrassing attempts, I got some of the locals to help me. I didn’t get the hang of it at once, but at least the local “aussies“ got a good laugh out of it.
After four fantastic days in Australia, it was time to take the plane to my next destination; Ireland.
Day. 5: Scotland
After another long flight, I had arrived in Ireland. The first impression when I walked out of the aeroplane was the vast difference between the climate in Australia and in Ireland. In Australia it was always sunny, very hot and a tropical like weather. In Ireland it was a lot of rain and when it wasn’t raining the climate was still very humid. That day they served haggis (the Irish national meal that consists of cooked sheep’s head) at the hotel. The only comment I to that meal is that it will never be made or eaten in my house.
Day. 6: Scottish culture
Since my trip was coming to an end, I decided to use that day to take on some of the Irish culture. I went to a museum, where I got learn about the Irish instrument Bagpipe. There are evidences of that there was bagpipes in Scotland as early as 1581. When I was on my way out of the museum I just had to buy some souvenirs. I was lucky enough to find some nice kilts on sale. A “kilt” is a skirt-like Scottish outfit. The kilt has existed in Scotland since the 16th century.
Day. 7: Going home
Now, the last day of my vacation had come. Even though it had been a very interesting trip, it was very exhausting. I learned a lot about both Australian and Scottish culture, and that was my main goal on the trip. I really recommend everyone going on a trip like this. Thank you for following my blog. Goodbye for now.
